Bulong

Bulong Townsite Situated 32kms (approx) east of Kalgoorlie.

Originally known as I.O.U. named after the first mining lease in the area, the name Bulong started being used from about 1895 when the townsite was declared. The Bulong gold mining district was very active from 1893 till 1908 with some very rich alluvial and gold mining areas.

By 1900 Bulong was a very busy place with a population of 620 plus many thousands of prospectors and miners in the surrounding district. Bulong had 6 hotels and a brewery, three stores, a Post Office, Police Station and Wardens Court, various churches, a Town Hall, a Mechanics Institute and a Government Hospital.

By 1998, all but the cemetery had disappeared, and new a very large mining venture was in operation, this time not gold but nickel/copper
