THE POSTAL HISTORY OF THE ARMY OF THE BLACK SEA

1918 –1923 JOHN SLINGSBY

After 30 September 1918, when the armistice with Bulgaria came into force, the British Salonika Army was not involved in further hostilities in the Balkans. The timely surrender of Ottoman Turkey, which followed at the end of October, made the planned assault on Turkey-in-Europe unnecessary. Therefore British and Indian troops were employed on occupation duties, although not without some minor engagements and the Chanak Crisis, until the final withdrawal from Turkey on 2 October 1923. Throughout this period postal historians have, for their convenience, called our occupation forces "The Army of the Black Sea" despite the fact that this title did not apply officially for much of the period.

The book is divided in three parts ‑ Postal History, the Army's Order of Battle and the Disposition of Units.

The postal history has been covered in sections for each area of occupation, from Macedonia and Thrace through to the British Military Mission to South Russia and these are followed by sections concerned with functional matters of the British and Indian Army Postal Services. Each territorial section begins with a broad outline of the military activity therein and is followed by a detailed listing of the army and field post offices with their locations and dates of operation.

The sections dealing with functional matters help to breathe some humanity into what could be a dull sequence of stampless covers bearing army or field post office cancellations. They cover the civilian use of the army postal services, military censorship, types of stationery used, cachets struck on postal items, etc.

The Order of Battle of the higher army formations is covered in Part 2, starting with the infantry divisions and their brigades, and progressing through Ironside's Force, Lines of Communication, Army Troops and concluding with the brief periods and limited extent of the Malleson Mission and the North Persia Force whilst they were under Black Sea command.

Part 3 gives the disposition of all mounted regiments and infantry battalions of the British and Indian Armies employed in the Black Sea theatre. These are the units which are most easily identifiable from covers and postcards and enable collectors to determine the location of them from the postmark dates, especially during the censorship period. This information has, in some cases, enabled the location of an army or field post office to be determined.

Place names in the Balkans and the Near East often have more than one accepted spelling in the English language. The spellings of place names in this book were used by the British and Indian armies in the Black Sea theatre during 1918 to 1923.

The book has xvi + 234 pages, illustrated, soft-bound, bibliography, index. ISBN 0 9530004 8 6. The cost is £30-00, plus postage – printed papers air mail £9.89; surface mail £4.63.
